April 9th 2016 was supposed to be a Space Lectures appearance by Gene Cernan, but he fell ill and arranged (at short notice) for his Gemini and Apollo crew mate Tom Stafford to step in.

Tom looked frail, a shadow of the man you see in his Apollo publicity photographs and the only astronaut I’ve seen stay seated throughout.

Appearances are deceptive - he spoke for 100 minutes, without notes, covering his entire career in great and often technical detail. An amazing event!

After about 80 minutes the Space Lectures team start to get twitchy about time…
